Cable stepped into the Infonet chamber in the heart of the command center of his island haven Providence. This had become part of his daily routine, immersing himself in the stream of data in order to stay current with world events. Next to him stood Garabed Bashur, wearing his Black Box armor.
“What have we got today Gareb?” Cable asked him.
“The usual.” Replied Black Box. “Iraq is still eroding and the American government can’t seem to decide how to deal with it….Tony Stark went to D.C. to meet with the Commission on Superhuman Activities to discuss a proposed Superhuman Registration Act….Oh, and Rosie O’Donnell is joining the cast of ‘The View’.”
“Really?” remarked Cable, his interest piqued. “That should be different.”
Cable swam through the stream of data as it rushed like a torrent in his mind. Cable ran across a small bit of info that caught his interest; an artifact stolen from a museum in Prague, an old scroll speaking of the coming of the end times. He flagged it for further research and continued on. Not but a few seconds passed before he ran across another museum theft, this time a samurai helmet in Osaka. The markings on the helmet were sickeningly familiar. Cable flagged the data and this time did a concentrated search on recent museum thefts. Lo and behold he found another one, and ancient Aztec dagger that supposedly belonged to Tezcatliopoca, their god of war. Unbeknownst to the archaeological community, all three artifacts were related. All three tracked the path of the immortal mutant En Sabah Nur throughout the ages.
“Gareb, take these files and compile them. I need them ready in an hour.”
Cable stepped out of the Infonet chamber where his Chief of Staff, former Daily Bugle reporter Irene Merriwether was waiting for him.
“Irene, have Johann prepare an air skimmer, I’m going on a trip.”
“Your not going to be stirring up any hornet’s nests I hope?” asked Irene.
“I doubt it,” Cable replied. “Just going on a little adventure.” Cable added, “Have John prep the new tactical suit.”
Ten minutes later, Cable entered Providence’s laboratory facility with Irene following closely behind. “Okay, John, excite me.”
Prestor John, Chief of Religious Studies and fellow time-traveler began his presentation.
“This suit is a modification of your current ‘techno-suit’. The Cone of Silence is resident and will encase you in it’s gravometric shell. Unfortunately there’s no place for the circuitry that allows for the manipulation of the gravometric shell. Just be happy that you’ll be protected.”
Cable grunted acknowledgement as he began donning the gear. John continued.
“Your access to the Dominus Objective is limited. The datajack coming from the left breast can be connected to any hardline. You can download and store a terabyte worth of data.”
“This will do fine, John.” Cable said. “Thanks for all your hard work.”
Cable fastened the last of his buckles and stood before his entourage. The suit was black with gray boots and gloves. The tunic was sleeveless and gray stripe made a rectangle across the chest. Irene noted the pad covering Cable’s right shoulder, a star adorning the center surrounded by alternating red and white stripes, looking very much like the famous Captain America’s shield. Irene made a point of staring at the pad and raised a quizzical eyebrow.
“What’s that about?” she asked, amused.
“I find it…inspirational.” Replied Cable.
“What? I have my heroes too.”
Thirty minutes later Cable stepped onto the landing pad where his skimmer was prepped for takeoff. His new suit had some new accessories, courtesy of a quick trip to his personal weapons cabinet. An under/over plasma carbine was slung across his back, and he wore a twin holster at his waist, a plasma pistol on each hip. A twelve inch ion knife sheathed in his right boot completed his arsenal.
“So can we get your itinerary?” asked Johann Kriek, Cable’s chief of security.
“Wherever the adventure takes me…” Cable shot back. With that he boarded the skimmer and flew away to parts unknown.
