The sun was setting on the devastating scene, the unbelievable aftermath, of the fatal incident hours ago that early afternoon in Stamford, Connecticut. The sky was a mournful and sorrowful shade of maroon with the incoming dark night not too far behind. The fading light shone down in a red haze on the city below it and the rescuers working within it. Several dozens of fireman, all in yellow and black attire, searched and scavenged about the black and charred rubble that was once an elementary school. Protective helmets atop their heads. Oxygen tanks on their back. Masks on their faces. Sifting through the debris. Looking for survivors but finding nothing but burnt corpses. Bare skeletons. Bodies so intensely heated they crumbled to ash at the slightest touch. Men. Women. Children. All gone. But these civil servants weren’t alone in their search.
Aided by the world’s finest, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and several X-Men were about the scene; coordinating their efforts with the firefighters. Goliath, metamorphosed into his massive size, removed and sifted through gigantic slabs of rock with his increased proportional strength. The Falcon flew through the sky in his crimson attire with several packages of first aid kits strapped around his chest; delivering them to any survivors found, as little of them as there actually was. Sliding across the skyline, the X-Man iceman carried a wounded teacher in his arms. Not too far away, the normally seductive Spider-Woman floated about the sky carrying an unconscious child in her arms to a nearby aid station. Luke Cage and The Thing worked together to lift aside large pieces of rubble. Their eyes were in dismay as they looked upon two firefighters desperately trying to resuscitate a seemingly lifeless young boy. All the while, two concerned heroes stood side by side overlooking the tragedy. The technologically advanced Iron Man, whose hand rested on overturned piece of ruble in his red and gold attire, and the devout patriot Captain America; who hung his head in grief, his shield resting on his knee, as a half incinerated American flag lay strewn on the ground at his feet.
"I’m told they’ve got a lead on Nitro. Word is he sneaked out of town in the back of a pickup truck." Iron Man spoke from beneath his mechanical guise; who began to walk the decimated school grounds.
“Does it matter?” Captain America commented, walking aside Iron Man. His face was grim as to what he saw all around him. “All these children, Tony. F.E.M.A. Chief said there could be eight or nine hundred casualties. All dead for a stupid reality TV show."
"They could have called us, Cap. Speedball knew the New Warriors were out of their league. The whole country saw the tape where they said they were only chasing ratings."
Two firemen crossed the two Avengers paths while the conversed, carrying a black body bag between them. Meanwhile, across the way as they walked, they made their way towards another group of rescuers. The X-Men Cyclops, Wolverine, and Marvel Girl rummaged through gigantic pieces of rock and concrete as Colossus lifted massive chunks of debris over his head and placed them elsewhere. Two firemen, nearby, became desperately concerned as they searched the destruction in front of them.
“Marvel Girl! Cyclops! We need some help over here. Motion detectors are picking something up twenty feet down, but we haven’t got our diggers yet.” A hopeful firemen pleaded to the mutants behind him. The telekinetic Marvel Girl about-faced in her gold and green costume; spreading her stance wide and concentrating as she looked upon the mass of rock in front of her. At first, small pebbles and medium sized particles of concrete began to float up into the air. The firemen became alarmed and shouted. “Everybody back. Clear a little space, huh?”
As the firemen dispersed, a concerned Cyclops approached Marvel Girl from behind and spoke. “Can you handle this on your own, Rachel?”
“I can handle it, Scott." She said as the intimidating collection of gigantic Concrete slabs and iron wires floated up off the ground, to the last spec, and into the air. As they were removed, they revealed the entrance stairway to an underground shelter. A Stamford teacher slowly paced up the stairs, a child wrapped in a blanket and held in his arms, as three more students followed behind. Their clothes were tattered and covered with soot and ash. Some whimpered, but all were speechless. An inner terror still left its presence be known. One of the four firemen that helped the survivors out began issuing commands.
“Six more survivors over by the school’s north side. Bring blankets and a defibrillator.”
Almost at the same time, two dark, menacing, overlooking, shadows cascaded themselves over the scene; neither of which belonged to Goliath. Two deployed giant mechanical units of Sentinel Squad O*N*E* stood tall in their purple and blue color scheme. Their eyes glowed a lifeless red along with the bright center light upon their chests.
“You gotta be kiddin’ me.” Wolverine, who instantly perceived their presence, brashly commented.
“M-Mommy?” A young boy pleaded to his mother, while staring up at the massive robots, who held him tight in her arms before soothing his fear and calmly replying.
“It’s okay, Honey. They aren’t going to hurt you. The Sentinels are only here to keep an eye on the X-Men for us. They’re the good guys.”
Wolverine looked upward and spoke in defiance at the Sentinels’ presence.“We volunteer to help with a federal emergency and you’re still following us around?”
From inside the monumental machine, the pilot replied back casually through the Sentinel’s external speakers.
[shadow=beige,left,300][shadow=beige,right,300][shadow=beige,up,300][shadow=beige,down,300]"Just doin’ our jobs, Wolverine."[/shadow][/shadow][/shadow][/shadow]
Across the way, as She-Hulk traversed the ground and Iceman slid about the skyline, Goliath spoke with Ms. Marvel as they both continued to work their way though the debris with their superhuman strength.
“It won’t just be mutants they’re watching after this one, Ms. Marvel. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back. You mark my words.”
“You think?” Ms. Marvel replied as she began holstering a large slab of concrete off the ground.
“Are you kidding me? After Philly getting bombed, the Hulk trashing Vegas… Wolverine saying he was gonna kill the President?” Goliath spoke with the utmost serious nature as he looked over at Ms. Marvel who floated up beside him. “This is the start of the witch hunts, Honey. They’ll be coming after us with torches and pitchforks.”
“Yeah, well, maybe they’re right this time, Goliath…” She spoke in a disheartening and stress filled tone. “Who the hell can justify this?”
Rescue helicopters flew overhead; the Human Torch flying alongside a few with an injured survivor in his arms with the rest of the Fantastic Four searched down below. All the while as the heroes spoke among themselves.
