Infinity War
The Magus, who was created when Adam Warlock expelled good and evil from his soul after attaining omnipotence in the conclusion of the Infinity Gauntlet, developed a highly intricate scheme in order to gain absolute power over the universe. The Magus operated out of a far reality, where he acquired items similar to the Cosmic Cube, along with demonic doppelgangers of Earth's heroes and villains. One of these duplicates was of Thanos, as the Magus was interested in his behavior.
The Magus' power rendered Eternity catatonic and kept himself well hidden. After a confrontation with Magus, the real Thanos sought help from Warlock's Infinity Watch. Using Pip the Troll’s Space Gem, Thanos and the Watch went to Death’s domain to seek knowledge from the Infinity Well. This did not go well, as they were forced to flee.
Galactus sensed the Magus and with his herald Nova, recruited the Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange. They traveled through many dimensions during their investigation, encountering many threats and almost dying quite a few times.
Also managing to sense the Magus were Thanos himself, the Infinity Watch, Doctor Doom and Kang the Conqueror.
The Magus sent duplicates after some of Earth's heroes. Reed Richards and Iron Man were defeated and replaced. Spider-Man, the Inhumans and Wolverine won their confrontations. Hawkeye and Spiderman met up, only to be brutally attacked. Reed's double assembled many of Earth's heroes, intended to destroy them with a large bomb. His plan failed, thanks to the heightened senses of Wolverine and Daredevil. Another confrontation with Thanos led to further confusion and general chaos.
The heroes decided to split their forces, a team remaining on Earth, while another team traveled the far reaches of space and time, tracking various leads.
The home team was again attacked by doppelgangers, some of whom were subsumed or taken over. The traveling heroes fought with Thanos and the Infinity Watch.
Galactus arrived to calm things down and join in the efforts against the Magus. It was decided the Infinity Gauntlet would be used but that plan also failed.
Galactus and the warrior-woman Gamora left in an effort to reactivate the gauntlet. Just as they had vanished, Warlock and the glove itself were kidnapped by Magus and the Thanos duplicate.
Magus observed Galactus' efforts to reactivate the Gauntlet. Quasar left on a plan for a back-up cosmic weapon, the Ultimate Nullifier. This also failed.
The Magus' related attempt to merge the Earth and moon with versions he desired was delayed by various telepaths and the Earth-bound hero known as Sleepwalker.
Thor was sent to Earth's moon and saw a double of Earth near the original. A merging was happening, which Sleepwalker and various telepaths succeeded in delaying.
Doctor Doom and his untrustworthy ally Kang invaded Magus' stronghold. The controls for the Cosmic Cubes were damaged and several fights broke out. Just then, Galactus succeeded in his attempt to reactivate the Gauntlet. Unfortunately, the Magus was in control of it at the time and, as would anyone wearing it, became God. Quasar was slain.
The remaining heroes stormed Magus' fortress as a distraction, fighting an army of duplicates. Many fell, to be absorbed. Thanos attacked Magus directly, after a powerful confrontation with his own double.
After much manipulation, the Magus created a throne room with many of his enemies displayed like pictures. Further distractions allowed Warlock to grab the Gauntlet. Since Warlock had wielded it before, a bond between he and it allowed him to manipulate enough forces to defeat Magus and entrap him in the soul gem.
The forces of the battle almost overwhelmed and destroyed Galactus' ship and the heroes within but Warlock teleported them to safety just as the ship was crumbling.
The Gauntlet was decreed never to be functional again; this by the one power higher then it. The cosmic containment units were not to be found at all, seemingly stolen by Warlock's good half. Where Magus had been his evil side, Warlock has also ejected his good side, which seemed to have gained a mind of its own.
