Second Genesis
The very first X-Men team of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Iceman, Havok and Lorna Dane venture to the island of Krakoa and vanish. The first attempt to retrieve the missing X-Men was conducted with a team of young mutants: the energy-wielding Vulcan, time-manipulator Sway, the hyperadaptive Darwin and terrakinetic Petra. This mission ended in a catastrophe, seemingly claiming all of their lives. However, Vulcan had survived, having absorbed the energies from his fallen comrades. After the debacle, the X-Men, especially Cyclops, were deeply distraught and Professor Xavier decided to mind-wipe them in order to spare them the agony, and to clear his name. This prompts the professor to assemble a new team of X-Men to rescue the old. The new team includes Sunfire, Banshee, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird, and Wolverine.
The team soon learns that Krakoa is not just an island, but a giant mutant as well. They are successful in rescuing the old X-Men as well as destroying the island by shooting it into outer space with Polaris's power, despite hiccups in their first time working together. When Polaris blasted Krakoa into outer space, Vulcan was shot into space, too, but survived in a comatose state, thanks to Darwin's reactive powers.
The mission ends with the question of the future of the thirteen X-Men. That question is answered when the old team, except for Cyclops, quits the X-Men. The new team continues on the first team’s legacy, save for Sunfire who also quits and Thunderbird who later meets an untimely end. Yet no X-Men could foresee the events that would later transpire, when Jean Grey returns—leading to the birth of the Phoenix.
